On June 7th we had the privilege of welcoming British Columbia Minister of Agriculture Lana Popham to Oakland’s Elementary School.  During her visit, the Minister toured our school gardens and visited our “Microgreens Project”.

Through the Farm to School Grant we have just begun our Microgreens project at Oaklands.  Thus far, students and staff have planted two crops of microgreens in our school kitchen consisting of peas, broccoli, and sunflower seeds.  As we have just started, our goal is to eventually be selling some of these microgreens to our school community and uses the rest to make student salads and smoothies.

The Minister spent time with a several of our Grade 4 students and their teacher learning about the project.  She heard from students on how the microgreens are grown and the purpose of the project.  Overall, the visit was a huge success!  We hope to see the Minister back next school year as our project truly gets off the ground.
