The Grade 1 class in Ecole Mountainview School was able to plant and grow microgreens in their class. From some of the grant money we purchased trays and microgreen seeds. We got soil donated from parents. We also worked together with community members such as the Spotted Horse Nursery in Terrace. Cathy the owner of the nursery was very supportive and taught me the ins and outs of growing microgreens and what equipment we needed to have in order to grow them in our classroom.
On May 7, the Grade 1 Class students planted broccoli microgreen seeds. They watered them and watched them grow. They learned what conditions the microgreens needed in order to grow successfully. Light, warmth, soil and water was the main determinants of success.
2 weeks later the students were able to enjoy the microgreens in their sandwiches, salads but others just ate them by themselves! Yummy!
The students also planted Sunflower and Pea seeds.
The students observed how these seeds germinated, grew and made observations and recorded their findings.
The Grade 1 students showed great interest and enjoyed taking care of the plants and had fun eating them!
